The Macadamia history book

The Macadamia ~ Australia’s Gift To The World by Ian McConachie AM.

Originally enjoyed by Australia’s First Nations people, these tasty and nutritious nuts  were only introduced to the rest of the world from the late 1800s.  Their story is told by long-time macadamia champion Ian McConachie AM, who has dedicated much of his life to developing the industry and protecting the unique Australian species that sustain it.

Ian tells how macadamias evolved in Australian rainforests, some  of the Aboriginal names and legends about macadamias and the enthusiasm of early settlers for this nutritious treat. He explains how and why an industry developed in Hawaii before returning to Australia, and the phenomenal growth of the Australian industry from 40 to 60,000 tonnes in 50 years.

“This is a story with it all; heroes, villains, wrong turns and lost ways, new inventions, David and Goliath battles over international trade, and colourful characters, some with a utopian vision, others perhaps driven by the dream of a quick profit.” Jolyon Burnett, former CEO of Australian Macadamia Society

Ian has donated the book and all proceeds from its sale to protect macadamias and their rainforest habitat.

The 324 page, full-colour book is sold here through Australian Scholarly Publishing.

Now available as an E-book through Google Books and Amazon – with excellent search capabilities! If you are buying the book at an event or stall, and wish to pay electronically, you can do so here – but only if you have the book in front of you.
