Macadamia industry support
There is a flourishing industry based on growing, processing and selling macadamia nuts. Some of these businesses support the conservation of wild macadamias and their habitat through project sponsorship – more details on our News and Projects page.
Special thanks to Marquis Macadamias which donated $10,000 a year from 2015 to 2020 – we used these funds to restore macadamia habitat and support new and innovative conservation projects such as the macadamia longevity project and cryopreservation of macadamia embryos for long-term storage of wild DNA.
The David Knappick Foundation generously supported research that confirmed the remaining diversity of wild macadamias and the importance of this diversity to the development of cultivars with improved performance and resistance to pests and disease.
Three grower companies, the Steinhardt family, Stahmann Webster and Gondwana Macadamias have made a long term commitment to host wild macadamia arboreta. These living collections will be an insurance policy against unexpected loss of wild populations through fire, flood or illegal clearing.
MWT Macadamia made a wonderful contribution when they authorised Grower Services Officer Andrew Burnside to spend part of his time supporting macadamia conservation. Now retired, WMC is lucky to have Andy as a Board member.

Macadamia farmers
MCT1 is a popular new commercial macadamia variety, named after the Macadamia Conservation Trust. Ian and Jan McConachie generously donated the Plant Breeder Variety Rights for MCT1 to the MCT. A Royalty fee of $4 is payable for each MCT1 tree purchased and this income funds many of our conservation projects.
